   Facts

The fact sheets listed below are free resources provided by the American Psychological Association (APA) Public Education Campaign. They are intended to help consumers learn about mental health disorders and how licensed psychologists may help people with a variety of health-related problems.

Interpersonal Effectiveness – Basic Skills

Ask for what you need from others in socially appropriate ways
Be assertive by “standing up for yourself without putting others down.”
Say “yes” or “no” with gentle power, based on your values and your willingness to do what is asked of you
Negotiate demands on you by others, with your needs and wants in a balanced way
Do not sacrifice yourself for others because they demand it; do it willingly by choice if you decide to do it
Maintain the relationship while you stand up for your beliefs and values
Enhance you self-respect in every moment; it’s the core of your being
Give up the idea that if you do what others demand of you, then they will give you what you want later and respect you
Motivation to earn someone’s approval will rarely get you the type of relationship you want; it usually gets you the opposite

Wisdom

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
Courage to change the things I can,
And wisdom to know the difference

Living one day at a time
Enjoying one moment at a time
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it

Trusting that He will make all things right
If I surrender to his will
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy in the next.
